Flat Feet

For Women > Podiatry > Conditions > Flat Feet

The sudden increase in weight, especially during the first few months of pregnancy, can have an impact on your feet structure, and often cause the arches to lower. Your body also releases a hormone called relaxin during pregnancy, which allows the pelvis to open for delivery. But this can have the effect of relaxing ligaments in the feet and ankles too, making them more flexible, and contributing to the appearance of flat feet. This can lead to aches and pains in your feet as tendons, ligaments and muscles in the feet and legs all have to work harder to support the foot and may become strained from overuse.

How can a Podiatrist help?

  • Our podiatrist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your legs and feet to identify the cause. A detailed history and physical examination will be conducted. Dynamic and static assessments will include:
    • Hip examination
    • Knee examination
    • Ankle and foot examination
    • Standing and gait analysis
    • Footwear analysis and advice
  • From the findings, the podiatrist will construct a treatment plan. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment will include the application of foot orthoses , footwear changes, and specific exercises to strengthen the ankles and feet. The podiatrist will also recommend appropriate indoor footwear with the suitable arch support and cushioning if required, for wearing throughout your pregnancy and confinement period.
