What is Paediatric Physiotherapy?
Paediatric physiotherapists can provide rehabilitation for babies, children, and adolescents. Children are not just mini-adults; they require specialist care to optimise their recovery. Our physiotherapists at Women & Children Centre by Physio & Sole are specialised in a variety of congenital, developmental, and orthopaedic paediatric conditions. Paediatric Physiotherapists can help your child with:
- Relieving their pain
- Achieving developmental milestones
- Optimising posture
- Injury prevention and improving physical performance
- Improving the quality of life
When is Paediatric Physiotherapy Required?
Paediatric physiotherapy may be required when children experience delays or difficulties in their physical development or have neurological or musculoskeletal conditions that affect their mobility and function. This can include infants who have not met their developmental milestones, children who tip toe walk, and those who have scoliosis or have been diagnosed with torticollis. Paediatric physiotherapy helps to assess and treat these conditions, promotes optimal physical function, and improves the child’s quality of life.
Who Needs a Paediatric Physiotherapist?
Various types of patients may require the services of a paediatric physiotherapist. These include infants who are born prematurely or have congenital conditions that impact their motor development, and those with musculoskeletal disorders such as scoliosis. In addition, children who have experienced trauma or undergone surgery may require physiotherapy to aid their recovery.
Factors that may make a child’s condition worse include lack of appropriate intervention, delayed treatment, poor compliance with therapy, inadequate support at home, and co-existing medical conditions. Early identification and timely physiotherapy are crucial to optimise the child’s physical function and reduce the impact of their condition on their quality of life. Our paediatric physiotherapists in Singapore can diagnose your child’s condition and recommend the right treatment to help them regain quality of life.
Diagnosis and Treatment in Paediatric Physiotherapy
In paediatric physiotherapy, the diagnosis and treatment are tailored to each child’s individual needs. The diagnosis typically involves a thorough evaluation of the child’s medical history, physical examination, and various assessments to identify any underlying conditions or injuries that may be impacting their physical function. After the diagnosis, the physiotherapists at our Women and Children Centre in Singapore will provide a personalised treatment plan that addresses their specific needs.
The type of treatment may include exercises, stretches, manual therapy, and the use of assistive devices to improve strength, mobility, balance, and coordination. The treatment plan may also involve working on the child’s daily activities to help them function more independently. The goal of paediatric physiotherapy is to optimise the child’s physical function and improve their quality of life.
What to expect from a Paediatric Physiotherapy session?
During the physiotherapy session, our physiotherapists will assess your child through play and age-appropriate instructions. The treatment session may include soft tissue massage, postural education, specific therapeutic exercise like strength or balance training, working on achieving milestones or independent mobility and improving flexibility. Follow-Up in Paediatric Physiotherapy
The follow-up process in paediatric physiotherapy involves regular assessments to evaluate the child’s physical abilities and functional limitations, as well as adjusting the treatment plan to meet the changing needs of the child. Communication and collaboration between the physiotherapist, the child, and their caregivers are essential to ensure that the therapy plan is aligned with the child’s goals and expectations.
The follow-up process may also involve providing guidance on exercises or activities to perform at home to reinforce the therapy plan. The paediatric physiotherapist will also provide guidance on how to safely resume daily activities and sports while ensuring that the child is not at risk for re-injury. By monitoring progress and adjusting the therapy plan as needed, the follow-up process helps to ensure that the child achieves their maximum potential and maintains their gains over time.
Possible Side Effects of Paediatric Physiotherapy
Paediatric physiotherapy is a type of physical therapy aimed at improving the movement and function of children with developmental or physical disabilities. While it is generally safe, there are possible risks and side effects that parents should be aware of. These may include muscle soreness, fatigue, or injury, and it is important to discuss any concerns with our qualified paediatric physiotherapists in Singapore.
