Heel pain is a common symptom experienced. The most common conditions for heel pain are plantar fasciitis (bottom of heel) and Achilles tendinitis (back of heel).
Causes
There are usually a few factors that lead to heel pain, which may include one or more of the following:
Overuse
Tight muscles/tendons in the legs
Gait abnormalities (overpronation or oversupination)
Ill-fitting, unsupportive or worn out shoes
Sudden increase in activity levels
Injury to the heel (stress fracture)
Weight gain
Certain disorders, including diabetes and arthritis.
During pregnancy, heel pain is commonly experienced in the third trimester due to the increase in weight, and also postnatal due to carrying the baby most of the day.
Most people tend to take heel pain lightly and do not seek treatment until it interferes with their normal activities. If heel pain is not managed early, the condition can deteriorate and result in more pain and disability.
How can a Podiatrist help?
Women’s and Children Centre can offer a comprehensive, non-invasive treatment for heel pain. Depending on the clinical assessment of your condition, we will customise the appropriate treatment plan. Dedicated to helping patients recover, our podiatrists will take time to educate patients on the cause of their pain and how to manage and prevent progression or recurrence.
Our podiatrists are highly trained to derive an accurate diagnosis and treat your condition. Dynamic and static assessments will include:
Hip examination
Knee examination
Ankle and foot examination
Standing and gait analysis
Footwear analysis and advice
Depending on the findings, the podiatrist will be able to construct a treatment plan for you. Treatment plans will vary according to each person and it may require several months for the pain to be completely alleviated. Treatment may include the application of manual therapy, shockwave therapy, foot orthoses, heel raises, footwear changes, or exercises and modification of activity.
If required, we can also look at recommending suitable indoor footwear and cushioning to help you through pregnancy and postnatal.
Let our podiatrists relieve your heel pain!
